A Golf Widow's Breakfast

Hello. My name is Mary and I'm a golf widow.

My hubby is so addicted to the game that I had to make him put in writing that at least one afternoon and one morning every weekend are mine. The man not only plays all summer long, but since a local golf course opened an indoor golf simulator last Fall, he now plays all winter too. Thank you Bay Meadows. NOT.

Honestly, I can't complain. There are worse things that a man could be doing on the weekends. *~} He usually plays on Saturday mornings, quite early and on Sunday afternoons, so Sunday mornings we go out to breakfast. Yesterday was no exception.

One of our favorite places to get our breakfast on is The Chocolate Mill, a fantastic little cafe, bakery and chocolatier, in downtown Glens Falls, NY. Owner/Chef/Certified Master Pastry Chef Frank Vollkommer, started offering up Danish Apple Pancakes (Aebleskivers) on the breakfast menu a couple of years ago, before they became the huge hit that they are right now. (btw, becoming a certified master pastry chef is quite a distinction - there are barely more than a dozen chefs with that designation in the world at present.)  So, what does my hubby love almost more than he loves me? Yup. Aebleskivers.

*** Update:  Sadly, The Chocolate Mill is now closed. It's a huge loss to our fair city (and our bellies) but we understand that people and businesses sometimes need to move on. Best of luck Chef Vollkommer, wherever you are.

Hubby's Breakfast ~ Danish Apple Pancakes or Aebleskivers (of course)

His meal came with the same fresh fruit that mine did, but the look of frenzied hunger on his poor wittle face told me that I was going to get one shot and one shot only, at capturing his breakfast on film. The other aspect of these lovely little sugar and cinnamon coated delights that I didn't get the chance to photograph, is the scrumptious apple and cinnamon filling inside.

One thing though... There seemed to be something a bit "off" at the cafe this time, because the "pancakes" usually come with another ramekin that has melted butter in it. We had to ask the server for it and she seemed a bit perplexed. She apologized and said she would get some for him, but then came back with a little cup of soft, but solid butter. Hmmmm. There is also usually a bed of the apple filling underneath the Aebleskivers too, but Hubbs was too hungry to make anything more of it.

My Breakfast ~ Four Cheese and Bacon Fritatta

This "fritatta" was delicious, but there was also a difference in the way that it was presented this time. It usually comes out to the table in a small, personal sized, rectangular baking/casserole dish with a still bubbling and browned top. Again, hmmmm... I didn't complain, because I was admittedly just as hungry as Hubbs, but it did make us wonder if Chef Frank was manning his usual post and just having an off day or if someone else was running the kitchen.

Will that keep us from returning to The Chocolate Mill for any of our future golf widow's breakfasts? Not likely. I have the feeling that all was forgiven once he took the first bite.

If you happen to be in or around the Glens Falls, NY area and you're looking for a scrumptious breakfast, lunch or dinner, or if you are in the mood for some incredible hand crafted pastries and chocolates, do stop by The Chocolate Mill at 164 Glen Street.  All "goofs" aside, you'll be very happy that you did.

I was not compensated in any way for this post. All opinions are mine or those of the person/people that accompanied me.

  1. Hmmm, I'd give them one more chance, but that would be it, unless there's nowhere else to go!

I make abelskivers, filled with apple and cinnamon, and a dollop of whipped cream, or sometimes chocolate!
Got the pan at the WSonoma Outlet, great price. Hard to make for a crowd though!

  2. We don't have many good breakfast places here, but I think I'll look at William Sonoma for the pan to cook those Danish Apple Pancakes in. Sounds wonderful. I like to make the Dutch Baby Pancakes and put fresh made apple filling in them. I LOVE apples in cooking.

OMG my mouth is watering...time for a weekend run to Huey's on River street...
Mrs. B have you been to Savannah? Huey's has a NOLA atmosphere and makes very excellent beignets...i made them at home too, but Huey's are excellent. Then of course, there's the view, and the outdoor dining.
I love places like this! Great pics...AND you changed your layout again, lol.
    Looks awesome- and very spring-y.
